TriNet alternatives: PEOs to compare and how to leave TriNet
We may earn a commission when you sign up through some links on this page. Commissions never change our scores or the order of our lists. How we make money.
TriNet does not publish prices and uses $150 per employee per month only as an illustration, according to its pricing page (checked October 16, 2026); by our October 2026 scores, the strongest alternatives are Justworks (67), ADP TotalSource (44), Paychex PEO (34). Justworks is the only one of those with a posted fee ($79 or $124 per employee per month), which makes it the easiest benchmark for a TriNet renewal.

TriNet's pricing page says "TriNet does not publish standard list pricing" and that medical, dental and vision premiums are billed separately from its per-employee fee. It uses $150 per employee per month only to illustrate how the fee works. At that illustration, 25 employees would be 25 x $150 = $3,750 a month in admin fees alone. Your real number is in your TriNet invoice; put it next to the alternatives below. More detail is in the TriNet review.
Why people leave TriNet
| Reason | How often | What reviewers say |
|---|---|---|
| Employees' FSA claims rejected again and again | Very common | "stop making me prove that I bought an eligible item five different ways" (Trustpilot, Aug 19, 2026; also Jul 28 and Aug 7, 2026) |
| Price per employee high and rising | Several | "continues to go up year after year" (Capterra, Jul 2026 and Dec 2025); a reported 3x jump after the Zenefits acquisition and "the hefty admin fee you pay Trinet" (HN) |
| Setup done wrong, months to fix | Several | "We were not set up correctly in many ways" (Capterra, Oct 2, 2026); "Our implementation 10 months ago did not go well" (TrustRadius, Aug 17, 2026) |
| Several companies under one owner | Once | "We ended up leaving them for ADP due to having multiple companies" (Capterra, Oct 20, 2025) |
| Unlabeled prior-period charges | Once | Capterra, Jul 13, 2026 |
| 401(k) migration errors | Once | Missed employer contributions after a 401(k) move (TrustRadius, Aug 23, 2026) |
Source: review pages linked, read Oct 16, 2026. TriNet shows 3.9 out of 5 from 230 Trustpilot reviews and 4.2 out of 5 from 1,988 G2 reviews (seen Oct 16, 2026).
The FSA complaints come from worksite employees, not owners. If staff are angry about benefits administration, that is a retention problem even when the invoice looks fine.
Before you switch: renegotiate, downgrade or move
- Renegotiate at renewal. Bring a written competing quote in dollars per employee per month. Justworks posts $79 or $124, which gives you a public benchmark.
- Downgrade to ASO. TriNet's referral terms list a separate ASO program. ASO is an industry term for a setup where you stay the only employer, so your team would leave TriNet's co-employment and its large-group health plans. TriNet does not publish what its ASO includes; ask.
- Move. Switch to another PEO (ranked below) or leave the PEO model for payroll plus a broker.
If your reason is several companies, ask each alternative how it handles multiple EINs before you sign; that was the stated reason one Capterra reviewer moved to ADP.

Leaving the PEO model instead
If you have grown to the point where you can buy group health insurance through a broker, payroll software costs far less than a PEO fee. You take back the employer duties: workers' comp, state accounts and federal employment tax liability.
| Option | Price | Monthly cost for 25 |
|---|---|---|
| Justworks Payroll | $50 + $8 per employee (published) | $50 + 25 x $8 = $250 |
| Gusto Plus (multi-state) | $80 + $12 per person (published) | $80 + 25 x $12 = $380 |
| ADP RUN Essential | Quote only; about $79 + $4 per employee (Tech.co, Jan 7, 2026, user reports, not an ADP price) | Estimate: $79 + 25 x $4 = $179 |
Sources: Justworks and Gusto pricing pages, checked Oct 16, 2026; Tech.co ADP pricing guide (estimate). Excludes premiums, broker fees, workers' comp and taxes.

How to leave TriNet (or any PEO) cleanly
TriNet says "most" of its contracts have no long-term commitment, but it does not publish notice periods, exit fees or how long you keep access to records. Ask for your signed client service agreement first. Then use this table: each row is something that changes the day co-employment ends.
| Item | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Notice and final bill | Terms are in your agreement, not on TriNet's site. | Give written notice as the agreement requires and keep proof. Ask for a final invoice with every line labeled, given past reports of unlabeled prior-period charges. |
| Exit date | Quarterly returns (Form 941, state wage reports) are filed per quarter. | Leave at a quarter end, and at your health plan renewal if you can, so filings and deductibles split cleanly. |
| Health plans | TriNet's large-group plans end with co-employment. | Start new coverage the day after. Ask the new carrier whether it credits deductibles already met. Confirm who runs COBRA for people already on it. |
| FSA | Claims run out under TriNet's plan rules. | Tell employees the last date to submit claims, with receipts, well before you leave. |
| 401(k) | Accounts sit in the PEO's plan. | Open a new plan and transfer assets. Check the first and last employer contributions; one TriNet migration missed them. Law firm Fisher Phillips has a guide on 401(k) issues when a client leaves a PEO. |
| State tax accounts | Wages may have been reported under the PEO's state unemployment account. | Get withholding and unemployment accounts under your EIN before your first payroll. Gusto offers registration (Middesk, or $85 per state per month); Paychex requires you to register yourself. Missing a quarterly report can raise your rate. |
| Federal wage bases | TriNet is a CPEO, treated as a successor employer under 26 USC 3511(b). | Social Security ($184,500 for 2026) and FUTA ($7,000) wage bases carry over mid-year. Check state unemployment wage base rules with your state. |
| W-2s | TriNet is treated as the employer for wages it paid. | Expect W-2s from TriNet for its part of the year and from your new provider for the rest, both due to employees by January 31 (moved to the next business day when it falls on a weekend, so February 1, 2027 for 2026 forms). Confirm in writing who files what. |
| Records | Access terms are not published. | Download pay registers, tax filings, W-2s and benefits records for every year before access ends. |
| Credits | Credits such as the research credit and work opportunity credit stay with you, not the CPEO (26 USC 3511(d)). | Get the wage data you need to claim them from TriNet before you go. |

State unemployment is where switches go wrong most often. A Hacker News commenter said their rate "went from 0.8% to 12.75%" after a change in payroll providers, and another described a new provider that did not file wage reports in a quarter. See SUTA rates by state to know what your new-employer rate would be if you have to re-register.
