TriNet vs Insperity: fee models, contracts and support
We may earn a commission when you sign up through some links on this page. Commissions never change our scores or the order of our lists. How we make money.
Neither TriNet nor Insperity publishes a price. TriNet's page states it has no standard list price and walks through a $150 per employee per month figure purely to illustrate; Insperity bills direct costs plus a fixed-dollar HR service charge per employee that "won't increase if you pay your employees more" (pricing pages, checked October 16, 2026). Insperity is offering new HR360 clients a credit of up to $425 per full-time employee.
TriNet fits a tech, venture-backed or professional services firm that wants industry benefit bundles and long phone hours. Insperity fits a firm that wants a high-touch PEO and a service charge that does not grow with salaries. TriNet scores 50 and Insperity 33 on our PEO scale. Both are quote only, so the gap comes from what else TriNet publishes: a contract statement (7 points to 0), benefits detail (12 to 8), longer support hours (10 to 7) and multi-state service (13 to 10).

Both are large, IRS certified PEOs that co-employ your staff, run payroll and offer group benefits. Because neither posts a rate, the comparison comes down to how each builds its fee, what each confirms about contracts and support, and what reviewers report. If you want a posted price for reference, Justworks lists $79 and $124 per employee per month; see Justworks vs TriNet.

How the fees work out for a 10-person team
With no list price from either company, the useful math is about structure. Both describe a per-employee fee rather than a percent of payroll. ADP's PEO cost guide puts industry admin fees at 2% to 12% of payroll or about $40 to $160 per employee per month (an industry range, not a TriNet or Insperity price). Here is why the model matters for a 10-person team earning $50,000 each:
| Model | Annual fee | After a 10% raise for everyone |
|---|---|---|
| Percent of payroll at 2% | 2% x $500,000 = $10,000 | 2% x $550,000 = $11,000 |
| Percent of payroll at 12% | 12% x $500,000 = $60,000 | 12% x $550,000 = $66,000 |
| TriNet's $150 PEPM example (not a rate) | $150 x 10 x 12 = $18,000 | $18,000 (headcount unchanged) |
| Insperity fixed HR charge | Quote only | Same charge; Insperity says it "won't increase if you pay your employees more" |

Insperity's $425 credit
For 10 full-time employees, the HR360 credit is worth up to 10 x $425 = $4,250. Insperity's homepage does not show the terms, so ask whether it is spread across invoices, whether part-time staff count, and whether it is clawed back if you leave early. Treat it as a first-year discount, not a lower price: your second-year invoice is the one to compare.
Lines that cost more than the fee
Employer Social Security and Medicare on the same $500,000 payroll is 7.65% x $500,000 = $38,250 a year, and net FUTA is $42 x 10 = $420, at either PEO. Insperity folds workers' comp into its direct cost allocations, and TriNet bills premiums separately, so ask each for workers' comp per $100 of payroll by job class and the employer premium per employee per month as separate lines. TriNet reviewers report the per-employee price rising at renewal ("continues to go up year after year", Capterra, Jul 29, 2026); ask Insperity for its renewal history too. Run your state's tax lines in the employee cost calculator and see how PEO invoices are built.
Choose TriNet if
- Your employees will call in the evening: TriNet publishes phone hours to midnight Eastern on weekdays, plus 24/7 chat.
- You are a venture-backed or professional services firm and want an industry-specific benefit bundle.
- You want a contract without a long-term commitment and will check that your contract is one of the "most".
- You can meet a minimum headcount that TriNet confirms but does not publish.
TriNet
Quote only. Premiums billed separately from the per-employee fee (checked Oct 16, 2026).

Choose Insperity if
- You pay above-average salaries or expect raises, and want the HR service charge fixed per head.
- You want a high-touch PEO and are fine with weekday phone support from 7am to 7pm Central.
- You are a new client who can use the HR360 credit of up to $425 per full-time employee in year one.
- You will negotiate and want one bill that folds payroll taxes, workers' comp and benefits access together.
Insperity
Quote only. Direct costs plus a fixed per-employee HR service charge; HR360 credit up to $425 per full-time employee (checked Oct 16, 2026).

Contracts, exit terms and switching
Neither company publishes its termination clause, notice period, exit fee or how long you keep access to records. TriNet's one public statement is that most contracts avoid a long-term term. Insperity says nothing on the pages we read. Ask both for the client service agreement and read four clauses: term and renewal, notice to cancel, fees on early exit (including any promo clawback), and record access after you go.
If you move from one to the other
- Wage bases do not restart. Both are IRS certified PEOs, and under 26 USC 3511(b) a CPEO is treated as a successor employer for Social Security and FUTA wage bases. Confirm the certified entity named in each contract.
- Benefits change carriers. Move on your plan renewal date so deductibles do not reset midyear, and set an FSA run-out date with the PEO you leave.
- 401(k) transfer. Assets move to the new PEO's plan or your own. One TriNet client on TrustRadius says employer matches were missed when its plan moved (Aug 23, 2026); check every contribution after the transfer.
- Multi-state staff. Insperity's most serious recent complaint is multi-state payroll that was wrong for months (Trustpilot, Sep 3, 2026). Give the new PEO each employee's work and home state in writing and check the first two payrolls.
- Implementation. A TriNet HR director said setup errors took most of a year to fix (Capterra, Oct 2, 2026). Leave time for a parallel check before your first live payroll.
The fourth-quarter 2026 Form 941 is due February 1, 2027 (IRS). Starting on January 1 keeps a full year with one PEO. A missed quarterly wage report after a switch can push your state unemployment rate up sharply; one Hacker News commenter went from 0.8% to 12.75% (HN, Aug 17, 2026).
Documented complaints
TriNet
- Employee FSA claims rejected, with repeated requests for proof (Trustpilot, Jul 28, Aug 7 and Aug 19, 2026). This is the most common recent theme.
- The per-employee price rising every year (Capterra, Jul 29, 2026 and Dec 14, 2025).
- Setup errors and slow compliance answers, with escalation that does not help (Capterra, Oct 2, 2026; TrustRadius, Aug 17, 2026).
Sources: Trustpilot (3.9 from 230), Capterra page 2, TrustRadius. G2: 4.2 from 1,988 (seen Oct 16, 2026).
Insperity
- Multi-state payroll wrong for months: "we still had not seen one single correct payrole run" (Trustpilot, Sep 3, 2026, quoted as written).
- Slow support (Trustpilot, Aug 6, 2025).
- A former client's summary of leaving: "we fired them" (Jan 19, 2023).
Source: Trustpilot, Insperity, which has only 10 reviews (2.6), too few to call a pattern. G2: 4.3 from 431 (seen Oct 16, 2026). We found much less public complaint material for Insperity than for TriNet, which is not the same as fewer problems.
Compare more PEOs
Every PEO we cover is ranked by the same scale on our best PEO list. Vendor detail: TriNet review and Insperity review. Confirm entity names on the IRS certified PEO list, and if you only need payroll, see payroll software ranked by score or HR and payroll suites.
Bottom line: TriNet scores 50 and Insperity 33 on our PEO scale. Neither publishes a price, so get both quotes on the same headcount, salaries, states and plan design, compare the second-year cost after Insperity's credit runs out, and pick on support hours and benefits fit.
