Rippling vs Paylocity: pricing, modules and which fits

We may earn a commission when you sign up through some links on this page. Commissions never change our scores or the order of our lists. How we make money.

Rippling and Paylocity are both quote only. Rippling's pricing FAQ says plans "start at $8 per employee per month, with a monthly base fee" without stating the base; Paylocity shows only a pricing form (both checked October 16, 2026). An OutSail cost study (July 2026) places Paylocity payroll plus HR at $18 to $22 a head monthly, and Forbes Advisor reported a Rippling quote with a $35 monthly base (January 2026, cited by Gusto, a competitor).

Rippling fits a growing company that wants payroll, HR, IT, devices and global hiring on one employee record. Paylocity is the better match for a midsize company that wants a conventional HR suite, a staff community app and no IT layer. Rippling scores 21 and Paylocity 12 on our payroll scale, and 30 vs 23 on our HR software scale.

The two are built differently. Rippling sells payroll as one module on a platform that also manages apps, laptops, spend, PEO, global payroll and employer of record. Paylocity is an HR and payroll suite with time, benefits, recruiting and an employee community app. Both charge per employee and both use implementation teams, and neither posts its contract terms.

Estimated cost for 10 and 60 employees

Both columns are estimates. The Rippling figure is a floor: Rippling's FAQ says plans start at $8 per employee without naming the product, and we add the $35 base Forbes Advisor reported from one quote. The Paylocity figure is OutSail's band for payroll and core HR, plus its implementation estimate.

TeamRippling (floor from partial figures)Paylocity payroll and HR, year one (estimate)
10 employees(10 x $8) + $35 = $115 a month; x 12 = $1,380 a year($18 to $22) x 10 x 12 = $2,160 to $2,640, plus 10% to 20% implementation ($216 to $528): $2,376 to $3,168
60 employees(60 x $8) + $35 = $515 a month; x 12 = $6,180 a year($18 to $22) x 60 x 12 = $12,960 to $15,840, plus 10% to 20% implementation ($1,296 to $3,168): $14,256 to $19,008

The Rippling column is not like for like. It covers payroll only, while OutSail's Paylocity band includes core HR. Rippling adds a per-employee fee for each further module (HR, time, benefits, IT, devices), and reviewers say costs climb with each one (Capterra). A fair test is to ask both for the same list of modules on the same headcount, with implementation as a separate dollar line.

Taxes do not change with the vendor: you pay the employer half of FICA (Social Security stops at $184,500 of 2026 wages per person), FUTA of $42 a head after the state credit, and state unemployment tax (2026 SUTA rates). For per-module detail, see Rippling pricing; for providers with posted prices, see payroll service costs.

Choose Rippling if

  • You want one employee record to drive payroll, app accounts, laptops and offboarding, so IT and HR changes happen together.
  • You hire abroad and want global payroll in "185+ countries" or EOR in the same system. See the Rippling EOR review.
  • You may want PEO benefits later without changing systems; see the Rippling PEO review.
  • You are a VC-backed startup that qualifies for six months free.

  • You want a traditional HR suite with time, benefits administration and recruiting, and do not need IT or device management.
  • You want an employee community and self-service app for a large or spread-out workforce.
  • You run a midsize company; Paylocity's site sorts buyers into 1 to 99, 100 to 499 and 500+ employees.

Contracts, exit terms and switching

Neither publishes contract length, renewal, cancellation notice, exit fees or record access after leaving. Rippling's terms page returned an error when we checked on October 16, 2026, and Paylocity's pages do not cover terms. Ask each for the order form or master agreement and check:

  • Term and auto-renewal, and the notice needed to stop renewal.
  • Whether the per-employee price is locked for the term, and the cap on increases at renewal.
  • Implementation fee in dollars, and whether it is refundable if go-live slips.
  • Who files the final quarter's returns and issues W-2s if you leave midyear.
  • How long admins and employees keep access to pay stubs, W-2s and documents.

Switching between them

  • Rippling to Paylocity: list every app, device and policy the Rippling record controls before you leave. Payroll moves to Paylocity, but app provisioning and device management need a new home.
  • Paylocity to Rippling: ask Rippling who registers any new state tax accounts. If it is you, register before the first payroll in that state; a Capterra reviewer says Rippling left this to them (May 11, 2026).
  • Either way: load year-to-date wages if you switch midyear, export time, PTO and benefits data, and agree who files the Q4 2026 Form 941, due February 1, 2027 (IRS). A missed state wage report after a switch can raise your unemployment rate sharply; one Hacker News commenter saw 0.8% become 12.75% (HN, Aug 17, 2026).

Documented complaints and ratings

Rippling

  • The bill is hard to predict because each module and each new hire adds cost, the most common theme in eight Capterra reviews from September 2025 to August 2026 (also raised on Hacker News).
  • Complex issues take a long time to resolve, and only administrators can contact live support.
  • Setup gaps, such as state registrations left to the client (May 11, 2026) and an employer health fund contribution shown twice (Dec 29, 2025).

Source: Capterra, Rippling reviews page 6. Rippling holds 4.5 from 2,548 reviews on Trustpilot and 4.7 from 14,535 on G2 (seen Oct 16, 2026), the strongest public ratings of the two by a wide margin.

Paylocity

Paylocity's Trustpilot page shows 1.3 from 129 reviews, against 4.4 from 6,311 on G2 (seen Oct 16, 2026). We have not yet matched those low scores to dated complaint themes, so we cannot say what goes wrong most often. Read the newest one- and two-star reviews on Trustpilot and ask the Paylocity rep about any issue that repeats. G2 detail is at G2, Paylocity.

Where to compare next

For each vendor alone, see Rippling's module-by-module pricing and the Paylocity review. Related comparisons: Gusto vs Rippling, Rippling vs ADP, Rippling vs Justworks, Paycom vs Paylocity and ADP vs Paylocity. For ranked options, try HR platforms that include payroll and the payroll software scoreboard. If health benefits are the main need, compare PEOs ranked by score and PEO costs.

Bottom line: Rippling scores 21 and Paylocity 12 on our payroll scale; both publish too little to score well. Pick Rippling if one system for HR, IT and global staff is the point. Pick Paylocity if you want an HR suite with an employee app and no IT layer. Either way, quote the same modules and get the contract terms in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rippling cheaper than Paylocity?
For payroll alone, the available estimates point that way, but they are not like for like. Rippling says plans start at $8 per employee per month plus an unstated base fee (checked October 16, 2026), and Forbes Advisor reported a $35 base from a quote (January 2026). OutSail estimates Paylocity at $18 to $22 per employee per month for payroll and core HR (July 2026). Rippling charges extra for each module.
Does Rippling or Paylocity do global payroll?
Both do. Rippling says it runs global payroll in "185+ countries" through Rippling entities and sells employer of record by quote. Paylocity lists global payroll in 100+ countries. Neither publishes a global payroll price on its own site (checked October 16, 2026).
Do Rippling and Paylocity charge implementation fees?
Neither publishes one. OutSail estimates Paylocity implementation at 10% to 20% of first-year spend (July 24, 2026). Rippling does not state whether it charges implementation, so ask for it as a dollar line on the quote.
Which has better reviews, Rippling or Paylocity?
Rippling: 4.7 from 14,535 on G2 and 4.5 from 2,548 on Trustpilot. Paylocity: 4.4 from 6,311 on G2 and 1.3 from 129 on Trustpilot (all seen October 16, 2026). Rippling's most common documented complaint is modular pricing that is hard to budget.
Can I cancel Rippling or Paylocity anytime?
Neither publishes cancellation terms. Rippling's terms page returned an error on October 16, 2026, and Paylocity's site does not list contract terms. Ask for the term length, renewal date, notice period and exit fees before you sign.
Is Rippling or Paylocity better for a startup?
Rippling offers eligible VC-backed startups six months free and manages apps and devices along with payroll, which suits a fast-hiring company. Paylocity aims at established midsize employers and shows no startup discount on the pages we read.
