Rippling vs ADP: payroll, PEO and global hiring compared

Neither Rippling nor ADP posts a full price. Rippling says plans "start at $8 per employee per month, with a monthly base fee" it does not state; ADP shows only "Get pricing" for RUN (both sites checked October 16, 2026). For a 10-person team, Rippling's $8 floor plus a $35 base that Forbes Advisor reported from a quote (January 2026) comes to about $115 a month before any other module; a third-party estimate puts ADP RUN Essential at about $119 ($79 plus $4 per employee, Tech.co, January 2026).
Rippling suits a business that would rather run payroll, HR, IT, laptops and overseas hires from a single system. ADP RUN fits a US business that wants a long-established payroll provider, published tax-penalty terms and a certified PEO it can move into later. On our published scores, ADP RUN (32/100) ranks above Rippling (21/100).

Both are quote-based, so the comparison is less about list price and more about what you are buying. Rippling is a platform where payroll is one module and every other module (HR, time, IT, devices, PEO, global payroll, EOR) adds per-employee cost. ADP RUN is a payroll service sold in four bundles that add HR support as you move up. More detail: Rippling pricing explained and ADP RUN pricing estimates.

| Tax filing guarantee | Not published on the pricing or compliance pages; terms page would not load | Reimburses penalties caused by an ADP "error or omission." Estimated cost for 5, 10 and 25 employees
Both columns are estimates. Rippling's $8 per employee is its own published floor, but the $35 base is from a Forbes Advisor quote (January 2026), cited in Gusto's competitor guide (August 2, 2026). ADP's $79 plus $4 for Essential comes from user reports compiled by Tech.co (January 7, 2026) and echoed by Eightx (June 2026). An older Fit Small Business quote (May 2025) showed ADP at $49 base plus $2.50 per employee per weekly pay run; the sources disagree.
| Team | Rippling (floor from partial figures) | ADP RUN Essential (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 employees | $35 + (5 x $8) = about $75 | $79 + (5 x $4) = about $99 |
| 10 employees | $35 + (10 x $8) = about $115 | $79 + (10 x $4) = about $119 |
| 25 employees | $35 + (25 x $8) = about $235 | $79 + (25 x $4) = about $179 |
Sources: Rippling pricing FAQ ($8 floor), checked Oct 16, 2026; Forbes Advisor via Gusto (Aug 2, 2026) for the $35 base; Tech.co (Jan 7, 2026) for ADP. Not vendor quotes. Payroll only.
On these estimates the two are close at 10 people and ADP is cheaper at 25. Real quotes will move for three reasons:
- Rippling modules. HR, time, IT and benefits each add per-employee fees. Capterra reviewers (September 2025 to August 2026) say this makes Rippling hard to budget.
- ADP tiers. Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro cost more than Essential, and no credible estimate exists for them. ADP may also raise base fees after the first six months with 30 days' notice.
- Promotions. ADP gives new RUN clients with 1 to 49 employees three free months (credits on months 4 to 6) if they sign and start payroll by October 22, 2026. Rippling gives eligible VC-backed startups six months free.
For taxes and benefits on top of these fees, see the cost of payroll per employee or use the employee cost calculator.
PEO and international options
If you may outgrow plain payroll, the upgrade paths differ.
- PEO. ADP TotalSource is on the IRS active CPEO list (report date August 7, 2026), includes workers' comp in its service fee, and is quote only. ADP's own guide gives an industry range of 2% to 12% of payroll or about $40 to $160 per employee per month, not a TotalSource price. Rippling PEO is quote only and was not found under the Rippling name on the IRS list, which may mean it certifies under another entity name. See ADP TotalSource and Rippling PEO reviews.
- Overseas staff. Rippling runs global payroll in "185+ countries" through its own entities and sells EOR. A third-party reference puts Rippling EOR at $499 per employee per month and global contractor payments at $30 per contractor (Gusto guide, August 2026). The RUN pages we read list no international payroll. See Deel vs Rippling for EOR detail.
Choose Rippling if
- You want payroll, HR, app access and devices managed from one employee record.
- You hire or plan to hire outside the US.
- You are a VC-backed startup eligible for six months free.
- You will negotiate a multi-module quote and read the order form for term and renewal, since Rippling publishes neither.

Switching between Rippling and ADP
Payroll data moves either way: employee profiles, pay rates, deductions, year-to-date earnings and taxes, and your tax account numbers. Rippling also holds HR records, documents and device data that ADP RUN has no place for, so export them separately.
ADP to Rippling
- Give ADP at least 30 days' prior written notice and pay all invoiced fees. Keep proof; Trustpilot reviewers in September 2026 report being billed after canceling.
- Export payroll reports, tax forms and I-9s. ADP may keep reports "for a period of time" it does not define, and I-9 access ends on the termination date.
- Ask Rippling who will register any new state accounts; a Capterra reviewer (May 11, 2026) had to do it themselves.
Rippling to ADP
- Read your Rippling order form for the term end and notice period; Rippling does not publish either.
- Export payroll history, W-2s, HR documents and app or device records before access ends.
- Have state ID numbers ready; ADP expects you to supply them.
- If you are on Rippling PEO, leaving changes your health plan and 401(k) too. Time the move with your benefits renewal.
Mid-year: the first day of a quarter is the easiest switch date, because one provider then reports the whole quarter. If you move later, the new system needs every employee's year-to-date pay, or it will keep withholding Social Security past the $184,500 wage base for 2026. Settle in writing whether Rippling or ADP files the fourth-quarter 941 and issues the 2026 W-2s; both are due February 1, 2027. A skipped state wage report can cost more than the software: one Hacker News commenter saw an unemployment rate go from 0.8% to 12.75% (August 2026). See 2026 SUTA rates.
Complaints buyers document
The two draw different complaints, and the ADP record is far louder in public reviews.
Rippling
- Budgeting: buyers say the invoice keeps growing as modules and hires are added, the most frequent theme in eight Capterra reviews written between September 2025 and August 2026.
- Support access: complex problems are slow to resolve, and reviewers say live support is open only to administrators.
- Setup: one reviewer had to register with state tax agencies on their own (May 11, 2026); another saw an employer health fund contribution appear twice (December 29, 2025).

ADP
- Reaching a person: Trustpilot reviewers on September 23 and October 7, 2026 describe support they could not get through to.
- Charges after leaving: three reviews from September 23 to 30, 2026 report bills arriving after the account was closed.
- Price changes: an October 1, 2026 reviewer says the bill rose by more than 10% with no notice, despite a promised one-year freeze.
- Tax filing: an October 5, 2026 reviewer blames a misfiled Form 941 for losing $31,000 of an ERC refund.
