Employer of record in Ecuador: costs and rules in 2026

The confirmed portion of Ecuador's employer cost is the IESS employer share of 11.15% of salary, $4,460 a year on a $40,000 salary, with 9.06 points going to IESS health insurance, according to the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS). A provider fee is billed on top, from $199 a month at Payoneer Workforce Management (formerly Skuad) to $699 at Oyster when we checked on October 16, 2026. The mistake to avoid is budgeting that 11.15% as the whole bill. Not yet included, because we have not confirmed them from an official source: the IECE and SECAP contributions, the two extra annual salaries (decimo tercero and decimo cuarto), the reserve fund (fondos de reserva) after the first year and employee profit sharing.
An employer of record in Ecuador is an Ecuadorian company that becomes the legal employer of your hire, registers them with the IESS and pays the 11.15% employer share each month, while you manage their day-to-day work.

Ecuador pays in dollars: what that changes
Ecuador uses the US dollar, so salary, IESS contributions and the EOR invoice are all in one currency. You fund payroll in the currency you already hold, so there is no payroll currency conversion to pay for. The local rulebook still applies.
- IESS employer share: 11.15% for private-sector employees under Resolution C.D. 501, with no contribution ceiling stated in the resolution. The employee pays 9.45%.
- Possible extras: countries.csv flags a reading of 12.15% if the IECE and SECAP contributions of 0.5% each apply. That was not confirmed, so our math uses 11.15%.
- Minimum wage: the basic unified salary (SBU) is $482 a month from January 1, 2026, under Acuerdo Ministerial MDT-2025-195 of December 15, 2025 (reported by the NMS law firm, December 22, 2025).
Bonuses, the reserve fund, profit sharing, leave, probation, notice and dismissal pay in Ecuador remain unverified in our data. Get the EOR to price each one and compare its figures with the Ministerio del Trabajo.

A $40,000 Ecuador hire, line by line
Because the payroll is in dollars, nothing needs converting.
| Line | Employer rate | Per year |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | $40,000 | |
| IESS health | 9.06% | $3,624 |
| IESS cesantia (unemployment fund) | 1.00% | $400 |
| IESS administration | 0.44% | $176 |
| IESS campesino insurance | 0.35% | $140 |
| IESS work risks | 0.20% | $80 |
| IESS pensions | 0.10% | $40 |
| Salary plus IESS (confirmed portion) | 11.15% | $44,460 |
| EOR fee at $599 a month | $7,188 | |
| Confirmed portion with the EOR fee | $51,648 |
Source: IESS Resolution C.D. 501 (Nov 13, 2015) rate table for private-sector employees; the $599 fee is the Deel and Remote list price seen Oct 16, 2026. Later annexes move part of the pensions and health split; the 11.15% total is unchanged in our data.
The arithmetic: 11.15% x $40,000 = $4,460, and the six IESS lines add up to the same figure ($3,624 + $400 + $176 + $140 + $80 + $40). With no IESS ceiling, the rate applies to every dollar. The $599 fee is $7,188 a year, so the confirmed portion is $40,000 + $4,460 + $7,188 = $51,648. With Payoneer WFM at $199 it is $46,848; with Pebl or Playroll at $399, $49,248; with Oyster at $699, $52,848.
Treat $51,648 as a floor, not the total employer cost. Still to add: IECE and SECAP, decimo tercero, decimo cuarto, fondos de reserva and profit sharing. Each one raises the real figure, which is why the EOR quote matters more here than the headline rate. The EOR cost index puts Ecuador next to other countries, and our EOR pricing breakdown explains the deposit and FX lines.
Ecuador contractor or employee
Paying an Ecuadorian freelancer by invoice avoids the 11.15% and the extra-salary questions. It also moves the risk to you if the person works set hours for you alone. A reclassification would bring back the IESS lines above plus the annual payments. If the work is a defined project, contractor management software keeps the paperwork straight; a contractor of record adds a classification check.
Provider choice for Ecuador
Two providers lead our EOR scoring: Multiplier on 79 and Oyster on 64, with Remote one step behind. In a dollarized country the FX column matters less, so compare deposits and exit terms. Oyster lists no termination fee. Multiplier asks for 30 days to process an exit and adds a 15% penalty when the client raises the termination with the worker directly. Pebl can lock each worker into a 12-month term.
Line them up in our EOR provider ranking, then check the exit sections of the Oyster, Remote and Deel write-ups. For a neighboring comparison, look at Colombia and Peru.
Setting up an Ecuadorian company
An Ecuadorian company swaps the $7,188 yearly fee for company formation, IESS employer registration and a local payroll provider. For one or two people the fee buys you out of all of that; as headcount grows, run the numbers in our EOR or entity comparison.
