Paychex payroll pricing: what Paychex Flex costs in 2026

Paychex does not publish prices for any of its payroll plans: Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete all show "Request Pricing" on Paychex's small business payroll page (checked October 16, 2026). The $39 a month plus $5 per employee that review sites still quote belongs to the retired Paychex Flex Essentials plan and is not a current offer.

Paychex's "Do Not Pay Until April 2027" promotion runs October 12 to October 31, 2026, unless extended by Paychex. New clients with 1 to 250 employees on a qualifying bundle who sign a one-year agreement and run their first payroll in that window pay no payroll fees through April 2027, up to six months. Setup and other fees still apply, and Paychex can recover the free months if you leave within the year.

Paychex Flex is Paychex's payroll and HR platform for US businesses. Paychex runs payroll, pays and files payroll taxes, and sells HR, 401(k), time and PEO services on quote-priced plans.

Paychex pages now show the banner "Paychex packages Basic, Foundations, Advanced, and Complete," but no official page we found gives a date for the rename, and the main payroll page still shows a "Paychex Flex Select" card. The promotion footnote names both the new packages and older Flex bundles. Expect a sales rep to use either set of names.

Paychex also owns SurePayroll, which does publish prices: $29 or $39 base (its own page shows both) plus $7 per worker. See the SurePayroll review. Our scores follow our published scoring method.

Features across the grid include payroll processing, employee pay options, W-2 and 1099 processing, tax filing, garnishment payment services, HR compliance tools, reports, learning and talent management, time and attendance add-ons and support tiers. What Paychex costs for 5, 10 and 25 employees (estimates)

None of these figures come from Paychex. They are third-party estimates, most based on older plan names.

Retired Flex Essentials: $39/mo + $5 per employee (Fit Small Business, May 29, 2026; B2B Reviews, Oct 1, 2026, which labels it Select)$39 + (5 × $5) = $64$39 + (10 × $5) = $89$39 + (25 × $5) = $164
Old Flex Pro: about $47/mo + $3 per employee (Eightx, Jun 18, 2026)$47 + (5 × $3) = $62$47 + (10 × $3) = $77$47 + (25 × $3) = $122
Old Flex Enterprise: about $95/mo + $3 per employee (Eightx, Jun 18, 2026)$95 + (5 × $3) = $110$95 + (10 × $3) = $125$95 + (25 × $3) = $170

Gusto, a competitor, wrote in August 2026 that Paychex "does not publish standard prices for its current payroll plans" and that $39 plus $5 is historical pricing, "not a verified current offer for new buyers." We found no source that prices Basic, Foundations, Advanced or Complete.

Real bills can be far higher. Costbench reports a median of about $10,800 a year from four buyer reports (data checked June 14, 2026), which is $10,800 ÷ 12 = $900 a month, though four reports is a tiny sample. A ConsumerAffairs reviewer said their bill went from about $57 to almost $400 a month after a sales call (August 12, 2025, ConsumerAffairs).

Ask for a written quote that lists the base fee, per-employee fee, whether fees are per pay run or per month, setup, year-end W-2 fees, delivery fees and any 401(k) or time add-on. Then hold it against published prices on payroll service costs compared.

Fees reviewers report and what the promo excludes

"They have a charge for just about everything including when they submit payroll," wrote a Trustpilot reviewer on October 5, 2026 (Trustpilot). Fees are the most common Paychex complaint in our research. Reported examples include a $56 fee that rose to $80, payroll runs costing $500 to $600 each, and $1,200 to fix year-end returns (ConsumerAffairs; Trustpilot page 8).

  • Setup fees: Paychex confirms they exist (the promo excludes them) but does not publish an amount. One reviewer reported a $2,340 setup fee plus $160 a month (November 14, 2025, ConsumerAffairs); another a "$1500 cancellation fee AND a $2000 set up fee" (May 5, 2026, Trustpilot page 8).
  • Add-ons switched on: "Paychex activated the 401(k) plan on their own" (May 2, 2025), and over $1,800 to shut down an unused plan (September 15, 2025) (ConsumerAffairs).
  • Charged separately from payroll under the promo terms: setup fees, NSF fees, delivery fees, premium processing, 401(k), Time and Attendance and other one-time fees.
  • State registration: not included. Paychex says "All employers are required to register and provide Paychex with agency ID numbers," and points to its paid Paychex Middesk Service for help.

The "Do Not Pay Until April 2027" promotion

The terms sit in a footnote on Paychex's small business payroll page (checked October 16, 2026):

  • Runs from October 12, 2026 to October 31, 2026, "unless extended by Paychex."
  • Free payroll services from your first payroll through April 2027, "up to six (6) free months." The earlier you start, the more free months.
  • New sales clients only, 1 to 250 employees at first payroll, who sign a one-year service agreement and run their first payroll during the promotion. Existing clients adding an ID do not qualify.
  • Qualifying bundles: Foundations, Advanced and Complete, and Flex Enterprise+, Enterprise, Pro and Select. Basic is not named.
  • "The Promotion applies to the payroll component only." The credit equals your quoted payroll fees for the month. Unused months have no cash value.

If you end the agreement before one year, "Paychex will discontinue the Promotion benefits and will be entitled to recover the value of any free months." Leaving in month eight could mean repaying six months of payroll fees. Get the quoted monthly payroll fee in writing so you know the size of that bill.

Tax filing guarantee: what Paychex publishes

We found no published penalty guarantee terms. Paychex's product page says its tax service helps "avoid tax penalties for late or inaccurate payments," with no terms attached, and its tax agency resolution page does not say who pays penalties. Its Taxpay terms page could not be read.

Reviewers describe the risk: a payroll error that led to an IRS notice and unpaid interest (October 6, 2026, Trustpilot) and quarterly reports not filed, followed by a state lien notice (October 31, 2025, ConsumerAffairs).

Before you sign, ask Paychex to point to the clause in your service agreement that says who pays penalties and interest from a Paychex error, and whether there is a notice deadline. For comparison, QuickBooks Elite pays both up to $25,000 a year and ADP RUN pays penalties from its own errors (ADP vs Paychex).

Contract, cancellation and W-2 access after you leave

Paychex does not publish its cancellation terms. What we know:

  • Contract: the promotion requires a one-year service agreement with a clawback. Without the promo, terms are whatever your service agreement says.
  • Notice and records: Gusto's guide to leaving Paychex (August 2, 2026; Gusto is a competitor) says there is no public notice period, that Paychex publishes no post-cancellation access period, and that for former clients "W-2s are printed and shipped to the employer or employees" (Gusto).

Billing after cancellation is one of the most common Paychex complaints. A reviewer on October 13, 2026 said they received a cancellation confirmation and then a bill some time later, another described a six-month cancellation (October 5, 2026) (Trustpilot), and ConsumerAffairs reviewers reported bills 3 and 9 months after canceling (ConsumerAffairs).

Read the termination clause before you sign, cancel in writing, keep the confirmation, download every W-2, 941, 940 and state wage report while you still have access, and check your bank for debits for a few months afterward.

Paychex support hours

Paychex offers phone, chat and email, plus a "24/7 online portal: pay stubs, W-2s, and chat support anytime." It does not publish phone hours.

A reply in a small business forum thread (started September 2022, replies to 2025) rated Paychex's support better than ADP's (forum thread), but recent Trustpilot reviews are harsher: "Absolutely horrendous customer service" (August 6, 2026), a lockout during identity verification (October 2, 2026), and "The frequent calls to sell additional services" (September 27, 2026) (Trustpilot).

What Paychex customers say

Paychex has 4.1 out of 5 from 1,748 reviews on G2 and 1.7 out of 5 from 858 reviews on Trustpilot (both seen October 16, 2026). The Trustpilot page covers all Paychex products.

  • Fees and price jumps: very common.
  • Billing after cancellation: very common.
  • Add-ons turned on without approval, with setup and cancellation fees: several reports.
  • Tax filing errors: several reports (Trustpilot, October 6 and 7, 2026; ConsumerAffairs, October 31 and April 24, 2025).

How we score Paychex

Paychex scores 25 out of 100, below ADP (32) and well below Gusto (69). No published price, no published tax guarantee, no published cancellation terms and very common fee and billing complaints account for most of the gap. The score measures what Paychex publishes and what buyers report, not the quality of its service reps.

How Paychex Flex scores: 25 out of 100 (payroll category)
CriterionPointsWhy
Price transparency and cost for 10 employees0 of 25All four current plans (Basic, Foundations, Advanced, Complete) are 'Request Pricing' only (checked Oct 16 2026); the $39 + $5 figure on review sites belongs to the retired Flex Essentials plan and is not scored.
Tax filing coverage and guarantee5 of 20Says it files federal, state and local taxes without stating state coverage (3 + 2), and you must register state accounts yourself (0); no tax filing guarantee terms were found on the pages we read (0).
Features8 of 20W-2 and 1099 processing, multi-state filing, time and attendance add-ons and 401(k) add-ons are listed with plan tiers not readable (2 each); integrations are not published on the pages we checked (0).
Contract and exit terms3 of 15Paychex publishes no cancellation terms (0); a competitor's guide (Gusto, Aug 2 2026) says former clients get W-2s printed and shipped with no published access period (1); the current promo needs a one-year agreement with clawback, and setup fees apply in amounts not published (2).
Support access8 of 10Phone, chat and email (5); the product page advertises a 24/7 online portal with chat but publishes no phone hours (3).
Documented complaint patterns1 of 10Trustpilot 1.7 from 858 reviews covering all Paychex products (0 of 4); fees for almost every action and billing that continues after cancellation (both very common) plus tax filing errors (several) leave 1 of 6.

Who Paychex fits, and who should pick something else

25/100Best for businesses that want a rep and room to add HR or PEO

Paychex Flex

Fits a business that wants to talk to a person, plans to add HR, 401(k) or a PEO later, and will negotiate a written quote. The April 2027 promo is worth the most if you are sure you will stay a full year.

How the score adds up

  • Price0/25
  • Tax filing5/20
  • Features8/20
  • Contract and exit3/15
  • Support8/10
  • Complaints record1/10

What works

  • Phone, chat and email plus a 24/7 portal
  • Path from payroll to HR Pro and PEO
  • Promo can waive up to six months of payroll fees

Watch out for

  • No published prices or cancellation terms
  • No published penalty guarantee
  • Many reported add-on and setup fees
  • Promo clawback if you leave within a year

Pick something else if:

  • You want to see the price first: Gusto Simple is $109 a month for 10 employees (Gusto vs Paychex).
  • You are weighing the two big quote-only providers: ADP vs Paychex.
  • You want a Paychex company with published prices: SurePayroll.
  • You want benefits through a PEO: third-party reviews (Eightx, June 2026; HR.software, May 2026) estimate Paychex PEO at $100 to $250 per employee per month; compare on best PEO companies.

More options with prices are on Paychex alternatives and best payroll software for small businesses.

Bottom line: Paychex will not show a price until you talk to sales, and the $39 plus $5 figure online is a retired plan. Get every fee in writing, read the termination clause, and only take the April 2027 promo if you will stay a full year.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Paychex charge for payroll?
Paychex does not publish prices; Basic, Foundations, Advanced and Complete are all quote only (Paychex payroll page, checked October 16, 2026). Review sites still quote $39 a month plus $5 per employee, but that was the retired Flex Essentials plan. A Costbench sample of four buyers reported a median of about $10,800 a year (June 2026).
Is Paychex Flex $39 a month?
Not as a current offer. $39 a month plus $5 per employee was the price of Paychex Flex Essentials, which no longer appears on Paychex's package pages. Gusto's August 2026 guide calls it historical pricing. Paychex's current plans are quote only.
What is the Paychex Do Not Pay Until April 2027 promotion?
From October 12 to October 31, 2026, unless extended by Paychex, new clients with 1 to 250 employees on Foundations, Advanced, Complete or certain Flex bundles who sign a one-year agreement and run their first payroll in that window get payroll fees waived through April 2027, up to six months (Paychex payroll page, checked October 16, 2026). Setup and other fees still apply, and Paychex can recover the free months if you leave within a year.
Does Paychex pay payroll tax penalties if it makes a mistake?
We found no published guarantee terms on Paychex's pages (checked October 16, 2026). Its product page says the tax service helps avoid penalties but gives no terms. Ask Paychex to show the clause in your service agreement that covers penalties and interest.
How do I cancel Paychex payroll?
Paychex does not publish cancellation steps or a notice period; you follow your service agreement. Cancel in writing, keep the confirmation, download W-2s and tax filings first, and watch your bank account, since billing after cancellation is a frequent complaint on Trustpilot and ConsumerAffairs.
Is SurePayroll the same as Paychex?
SurePayroll is owned by Paychex but sold separately with published prices: a $29 or $39 base (its pricing page shows both) plus $7 per worker a month, $9.99 a month for multi-state payroll and $50 plus $5 per form for W-2s and 1099s (checked October 16, 2026).
