QuickBooks Payroll, now sold as QuickBooks Workforce, costs $88 a month plus $6.50 per employee for its entry bundle with QuickBooks Online Simple Start, up to $203 plus $10 for Workforce Premium with Plus (Intuit pricing page, checked October 16, 2026). ADP publishes no price for RUN Powered by ADP; Tech.co (January 2026) and Eightx (June 2026), from user reports, estimate the Essential package at about $79 a month plus $4 per employee.

QuickBooks fits a business already on QuickBooks Online that wants posted prices and self-serve cancellation. ADP fits a business that wants a large provider with phone support and HR packages and will negotiate a quote, accepting 30 days' written notice to leave. On our payroll scores, QuickBooks (52/100) ranks above ADP RUN (32/100).

Most people comparing these two already keep their books in QuickBooks Online and want to know whether ADP is worth stepping outside Intuit for. QuickBooks prices payroll as a bundle with a QuickBooks Online accounting tier, so the plan price covers your bookkeeping software too. ADP RUN is payroll only, priced by quote, with HR add-ons in higher packages.

For more on each, see QuickBooks Payroll pricing in detail and ADP RUN pricing estimates.

Side-by-side: price, guarantee, contract and support

QuickBooks figures are from Intuit's pricing, tax penalty protection, cancellation and disclosure pages. ADP figures are from the RUN product page, its three-month offer terms and the RUN terms of service (effective February 12, 2026). All were checked October 16, 2026. Scores follow how we score payroll providers; ADP trails on price transparency (0 points to 15), features (4 to 10) and contract and exit terms (6 to 11), and leads on tax filing coverage (14 to 8) and support access (7 to 4).

Read the table with these adjustments:

  • QuickBooks includes accounting. The plan price covers a QuickBooks Online tier. If you would pay for QuickBooks Online anyway, the extra cost of payroll is lower than the table suggests, but Intuit's pricing page shows no payroll-only price to subtract.
  • Extra states on QuickBooks. Each additional state adds $12 a month. Ten employees in two states on Simple Start: $153 + $12 = $165 a month.
  • The QuickBooks promo. Base 50% off for three months: ten employees on Simple Start pay $44 + 10 x $6.50 = $109 a month for months one to three, then $153.
  • The ADP promo. Three free months arrive as invoice credits on months 4, 5 and 6, only if you keep the same bundle, payroll frequency and discount level, use direct debit and stay in good standing. It covers standard payroll processing only, not delivery fees, off-cycle courier fees or other services.
  • ADP's real number is a quote. The estimate covers only the entry Essential package. Enhanced, Complete and HR Pro have no credible public estimate. Ask for the per-run fee, year-end W-2 fee, delivery fees and any setup fee in writing.

Payroll software is the smaller part of what an employee costs. Employer Social Security and Medicare alone are 7.65% of wages, so a 10-person team at $50,000 each carries 10 x $50,000 x 7.65% = $38,250 a year before unemployment taxes. Our employer cost calculator adds state taxes, and what payroll services cost compares all the providers we price.

If they file your taxes wrong, who pays the penalty?

This is the most common complaint about payroll providers in recent reviews, and the two companies answer it very differently.

QuickBooks

Tax Penalty Protection exists only on Workforce Elite, the plan Intuit does not price on its pricing page. It pays penalties and interest "up to $25,000 per year". You must email the full notice to taxnoticeresolution@intuit.com within 15 days of the notice date. It excludes the tax itself, errors before your first Elite payroll, worker misclassification, labor law violations, willful or fraudulent input, issues Intuit already told you to fix, and accounts with NSF or billing holds. We found no penalty guarantee on the other plans.

ADP RUN

Section 11.A of the RUN terms reimburses "any penalty imposed against You as a result of an error or omission made by ADP" on every package. Interest is covered only when ADP held your tax funds past the due date. Errors from your own data, periods before ADP started, and late receipt of your ID numbers are excluded. Section 11.C caps ADP's total yearly liability at "the average charge for one payroll processing", and the text does not make clear whether that cap limits penalty reimbursement. Ask ADP to confirm in writing.

Whichever you choose, forward every IRS or state notice the day it arrives. QuickBooks' 15-day rule is strict, and both guarantees exclude errors that start with data you entered.

Choose QuickBooks Payroll if

  • You already keep your books in QuickBooks Online and want payroll posting straight to the ledger.
  • You want a price you can see today, no annual contract, and self-serve cancellation.
  • You pay contractors only, or mostly: the Contractor Payments plan is $25 a month for up to 20 contractors.
  • You can live without a penalty guarantee, or you will pay for Elite to get one.

Switching and canceling

The exit rules are the clearest difference between these two. QuickBooks lets you cancel in Settings, under Subscriptions and billing; the form cannot be changed once sent, the service ends at the close of the billing period, and there is no prorated refund. Keep the payroll bank account open until the final tax liabilities are paid. ADP needs at least 30 days' prior written notice under Section 12.A of its terms, and recent reviews describe being billed after cancellation, so send notice in a way you can prove and keep the confirmation.

  1. Time the switch. A quarter end is cleanest; January 1 is cleanest of all. If you leave QuickBooks mid-year, remember W-2s need an active subscription, or Intuit charges $150 to prepare them after you cancel.
  2. Download records before you leave. QuickBooks keeps payroll data for one year after cancellation. ADP says it may keep reports and tax forms for an unstated period, and I-9 access ends on the termination date. Save pay registers, tax filings, W-2s and I-9s.
  3. Load year-to-date totals into the new system so the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500 and the $7,000 FUTA wage base are tracked correctly.
  4. Agree who files the final quarter Form 941 and state wage reports, and update your tax agency power of attorney.
  5. If you take ADP's free months, you must run payroll three consecutive months and keep the same bundle and frequency to get the credits.

Documented complaints

ADP

  • Support that is hard to reach: "Their Customer Support is non-existent" (October 7, 2026) and "almost impossible to talk to a human being" (September 23, 2026).
  • Billing after cancellation (September 30, September 26 and September 23, 2026).
  • A price rise of "more than 10% without any notice" despite a promised one-year freeze (October 1, 2026).
  • A misfiled Form 941 that the reviewer says cost an ERC refund (October 5, 2026).

For QuickBooks against a payroll-first rival, see Gusto vs QuickBooks Payroll. ADP is also compared in Gusto vs ADP, ADP vs Paychex and Rippling vs ADP. All of them are ranked by score in our payroll software rankings.

Bottom line: QuickBooks Payroll is the one you can price: $153 a month for 10 employees on its entry bundle, accounting included, with self-serve cancellation but a penalty guarantee only on its top plan. ADP RUN may come in lower, by a third-party estimate of about $119 for 10 employees, but you need a quote, 30 days' written notice to leave, and you accept a liability cap. On our payroll scores, QuickBooks (52/100) ranks above ADP RUN (32/100).

Frequently asked questions

Is ADP cheaper than QuickBooks Payroll?
Possibly, but ADP does not publish prices. QuickBooks Workforce Payroll with Simple Start costs $88 a month plus $6.50 per employee, or $153 for 10 employees (Intuit pricing page, checked October 16, 2026), and includes QuickBooks Online accounting. Tech.co (January 2026) and Eightx (June 2026) estimate ADP RUN Essential at about $79 plus $4 per employee, about $119 for 10, from user reports that ADP has not confirmed.
Does QuickBooks Payroll pay IRS penalties if it makes a mistake?
Only on the Workforce Elite plan. Intuit's Tax Penalty Protection pays penalties and interest up to $25,000 a year, if you email the notice to taxnoticeresolution@intuit.com within 15 days of the notice date, and excludes the tax itself, misclassification and errors from your data. We found no guarantee on the other QuickBooks plans (checked October 16, 2026).
Does ADP pay payroll tax penalties?
ADP's RUN terms (effective February 12, 2026) reimburse penalties caused by ADP's errors, and interest only when ADP held your tax funds past the due date. Section 11.C caps ADP's yearly liability at the average charge for one payroll processing; whether that cap limits penalty reimbursement is unclear, so ask ADP in writing.
How do I cancel ADP RUN?
Send at least 30 days' prior written notice, per Section 12.A of the RUN terms, and pay all invoiced fees. Recent Trustpilot reviews (September 2026) describe charges after cancellation, so keep proof of the notice and check your bank account for the following months.
Can I still get W-2s after I cancel QuickBooks Payroll?
Intuit keeps payroll data available for one year after you cancel, but says W-2s require an active subscription, and it charges $150 to prepare year-end filings or W-2s after cancellation (Intuit help article, checked October 16, 2026). Canceling after you file year-end forms avoids that fee.
Does ADP work with QuickBooks Online?
Roll by ADP, ADP's separate small-business app at $39 a month plus $5 per employee, lists a QuickBooks Online integration on its pricing page (checked October 16, 2026). The RUN pages we read did not list integrations, so ask ADP about RUN directly.
